Forterro has become a dominant force in the industrial software sector, serving over 13,000 businesses globally from more than 40 offices.
With a commitment to enabling efficiency and competitiveness, Forterro’s digital footprint expanded significantly. However, managing over 10 separate product websites became increasingly challenging, necessitating a strategic overhaul.
Forterro now stands apart from its competitors by leveraging a unified, composable multisite platform that enables them to offer a consistent and superior user experience across all 10 of their product websites. This strategic consolidation has not only streamlined their digital operations but also enhanced their ability to scale rapidly and respond to market demands with agility.
From monolith to modern multisite
The goal
Forterro’s primary challenge was managing over 10 separate product websites, each with its own design, database, and content management system. This fragmented approach made it difficult to maintain consistency, scale efficiently, and update sites without significant risk.
The main goal was to unify these independent sites into a single, cohesive platform that would streamline operations, enhance user experience, and support Forterro’s growth strategy.
The challenge
The legacy monolithic structure posed several challenges, including slow updates, complex administration, and inconsistent user experiences across Forterro’s product sites. Scaling individual sites required immense effort, and the absence of centralized content management added to the complexity.
Forterro needed a solution that would address these issues while positioning them for future growth and technological advancements.
Benefits of a composable multisite approach
The shift from a monolithic structure to a composable multisite architecture has transformed Forterro’s digital capabilities. This modern approach allows each product site to scale independently, reducing the risk and complexity associated with updates and deployments.
Forterro’s new brand identity is also now consistent across dozen product sites including 123 Insight, Forterro, BPSC, Clipper ERP, Fortee, Garp, Helios ERP, myfactory, Orderwise, and Silog.
Centralized management of content and user accounts has simplified administration and ensured a consistent brand presence across all sites. Moreover, the elimination of technical debt and the introduction of flexible, modular design have empowered Forterro to innovate more rapidly, adapting their digital presence to future needs with ease.
How the Forterro composable multisite was built
Decoupled architecture
The Forterro multisite platform was engineered using a composable architecture, integrating a powerful Drupal backend with multiple Next.JS frontend applications. This headless CMS setup allowed for centralized content management while providing the flexibility to customize each product site’s frontend independently. The use of a component-based design system ensured consistency across all sites, while enabling easy scalability and quick adaptations to new requirements.
Technical backbone for the digital transformation
The multisite platform leverages cutting-edge technologies to achieve optimal performance and scalability. Drupal serves as the core content management system, handling all backend operations, user management, and content distribution.
The frontend is powered by Next.JS, a React framework that delivers fast, dynamic user experiences with server-side rendering capabilities. This combination allows for seamless integration between the backend and frontend, ensuring smooth content delivery and superior site performance.
Additionally, automated testing and continuous integration processes were implemented to maintain high quality and minimize risks during updates and deployments, making the platform resilient and adaptable to future needs.

Composable architecture is the go-to approach for modern organizations
The beauty of this approach lies in its flexibility and future-proof nature. With a composable architecture, you can easily swap out components as your needs evolve or when better options become available. This means your platform stays resilient, adaptable, and ready to meet future demands. It’s exactly the approach we took with Forterro, ensuring their multisite platform is not only robust today but also built to grow and adapt tomorrow.
By allowing each component to function independently, businesses can easily adapt to changing market needs, integrate new technologies, and customize solutions without overhauling their entire system. This modular approach ensures that organizations stay agile, future-proof, and able to deliver consistent, high-quality user experiences across all digital platforms.
