Viking Line saw digital disruption as their opportunity to differentiate their offering and create new passenger experiences.

The goal was to create a future proof digital platform that could operate across smartphone, tablet and laptop devices. The focus was on building a new innovative onboard experience that set Viking Line ahead of the competition and paved the way for future services.

How we've helped Viking Line

Project background & objectives

Digitalist has been a long-time partner of Viking Line in the development of digital services since 2013. The Viking Line App (App Store & Google Play), launched in 2015 and continuously developed afterwards, focuses on enhancing the passenger experience and creating a seamless customer journey. Through the app, passengers can manage the entire travel process—from booking and check-in to unlocking cabin doors and browsing onboard programs—all from a single mobile application.

The goal was to develop a scalable and user-friendly digital ecosystem that functions seamlessly both on land and at sea.

Technical solution & mobile application

A decentralized CMS and service portal operates across five Viking Line vessels. The system is designed to function reliably even without a continuous internet connection. Each ship has its own local CMS server, which automatically synchronizes when the ship docks. Synchronization is managed via Amazon AWS cloud services, which handle the CMS infrastructure.

The onboard web solution serves passengers through multiple channels: it delivers content to the Viking Line mobile application, cabin TVs, and digital signage displays.

The most visible part of the system for passengers is the service portal built with React Native technology, which allows them to:

  • Explore onboard services and tax-free selection
  • Complete check-in
  • Receive electronic boarding passes
  • Unlock their cabin doors with a mobile device

How we created a digital ecosystem

We started with interviews, workshops and focus groups with actual passengers and Viking Line personnel. Working collaboratively throughout the design and build process, we delivered a digital ecosystem with onboard apps, an eCommerce solution (https://preorder.vikingline.com), and an onboard network solution that keep the app working even at sea.

Onboard Apps: Created apps that offer various features and services to passengers, improving their onboard experience.

eCommerce Solution: Developed an eCommerce platform (https://preorder.vikingline.com) for seamless purchasing, both pre-journey and during the trip.

Onboard network Solution: Implemented a reliable network solution to ensure the app and other digital services work efficiently when at sea.

Just a few days after launch, the app became the #1 travel app in Finland and #2 travel app across Scandinavia.
